International Online Workshop on September 1

"Aging Data, Policy and Care in Africa: Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa"

The 2nd International Online Workshop

Aging Data, Policy and Care in Africa: Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa

https://global-ageing.org/workshop/international-online-workshop-2026/

Date: September 1st, 2026
Time: 16:00–20:00 (Japan)
10:00–14:00 (Kenya)
09:00–13:00 (South Africa)
07:00–11:00 (Senegal)
Venue: Online
Languages: English and French

Concept:

Although Sub-Saharan Africa continues to have a relatively young population, rapid increase of older persons and the growing burden of chronic diseases and long-term care needs are emerging as important policy challenges. The development of systems that support the health, care, and well-being of older adults is closely linked to UHC and broader social protection policies.

Rather than simply comparing ageing rates across countries, this workshop will examine how ageing-related data are generated, translated into policy, and reflected in care practices in each national context. Through this approach, it is aimed to generate empirical evidence that contributes to policy development in African countries while also facilitating comparative research with the experiences of Japan and other Asian countries with African countries.

This workshop is organized as the kick-off event for the international collaborative research activities of the KAKENHI “Ageing jn Africa” Project. It aims to provide a platform for comparative discussions on ageing-related data, policies, care systems, social protection, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), end-of-life (EOL) care, and related issues in the context of population ageing across African continent.
