Practices Revealed from a Rural Research in Kenya
In 2021, theUnited Nations declared the "UN Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021–2030" calling for "global action on healthy ageing." While older adults in sub-Saharan Africa are expected to grow tenfold by century's end, understanding remains limited about policies and systems promoting well-being in later life, including care, healthcare, welfare, pensions, and social engagement. The practices of community-based care and their cultural and institutional foundations have not been thoroughly explored.
This symposiumfocuses on a survey of older individuals in Kwale County, southern Kenya, examining how "Healthy and Active Ageing" can be interpreted within the African context. The research includes seven years of groundwork and preliminary studies, followed by monitoring and individual visits beginning in 2022. The monitoring, from October to December 2022, involved over 4,300 people aged 40 and above, including older adults and those nearing older age. We will present monitoring results, including age distribution, socioeconomic background, and insights on living arrangement and social connections.
Presentations willcover topics on older women by Kaori Miyachi, local perceptions of dementia by Satoko Horii, and Africa-Asia comparisons by Reiko Hayashi. Our aim is to examine how understanding "ways of living, connecting, and ending life" within a community can enhance global health dialogue.
アフリカの高齢者：ケニア農村調査から見えてきた住まい方、つながり方、終い方

2021年、国連は「2021–2030年 国連ヘルシー・エイジングの10年（UN Decade of Healthy Ageing）」を宣言し、「高齢者が尊厳と平等、そして健康的な環境の中で自らの可能性を最大限に発揮できる社会の実現のためには、健康的な高齢化に関する10年間の世界的かつ協調的な行動が急務である」と訴えた。
一方で、サブサハラ・アフリカの高齢者人口は、今世紀末までに現在の10倍に達すると予測されているにもかかわらず、高齢期のウェルビーイングを支える政策や制度、介護や医療、福祉、年金、社会的参加に関する知見は極めて限られている。とりわけ、地域社会に根ざしたケアの実践や、それを支える文化的・制度的基盤については、いまだ十分に明らかにされていない。
本シンポジウムでは、ケニア南部のクワレ県における高齢者調査を基軸に、関連する事象も交えながら、アフリカの文脈において「ヘルシー＆アクティブ・エイジング」をいかに理解し、いかに評価することが可能なのか、という根本的な問いにアプローチする。
クワレにおける研究は、7年にわたる準備と予備的調査のフェーズ、2022年からのサーベイランスと個別訪問のフェーズからなる。サーベイランスは2022年の10月から12月にかけて実施され、高齢者とのその予備軍（40歳以上）の計4300人あまりへの訪問を実現した。本発表ではサーベイランスの結果の一部として年齢構成、社会経済的背景、そして特に「住まい方」と「つながり方」に関する結果を提示する。
本シンポジウムでは高齢女性への個別訪問を繰り返してきた宮地による発表、認知症にローカルな認識を明らかにした堀井の発表、そしてサーベイランスの結果と関連して林によるヘルシー＆アクティブエイジング指標に関する発表を行い、一地域における多角的なアプローチによる「住まい方、つながり方、終い方」の理解がグローバルヘルスの文脈においてどのような意義を持つか議論したい。
